Independent AI consulting · Calgary, Alberta

Practical AI consulting, built on the tools you already have.

Solid Light Consulting is an independent AI consultancy in Calgary. I help Alberta nonprofits and businesses put AI to work on the information and systems they already own: in plain English, inside the tools their people already use, with privacy and security designed in from the start. Your team stays in charge; I bring the AI know-how.

AI help for Alberta nonprofits and charities

The Community AI Programme

This year I'm working with a small number of Alberta nonprofits at no cost or at a reduced community rate. The work is practical: finding where AI can safely take routine load off your staff, using the tools you already have. You come away with a written plan your team can act on, whether or not we keep working together.

A good fit: small and mid-sized nonprofits and charities with a donor CRM, case-management or reporting system, and someone on staff who would lead the work with me.

Pro bono

AI Readiness & Opportunity Assessment

Up to 20 hours · no fee

A short, scoped engagement: understand how your team works, review what's safe to use AI for, rank the opportunities, and put one quick win into use while we work together.

Community rate

Community Advisory

CAD $45/hr

For follow-on work: hands-on help adopting one or two AI tools, or advisory support on a larger, funded project. Hours are estimated and agreed in writing before work starts.

What you get

  • Discovery summary of current workflows, where staff time goes, and candidate uses for AI.
  • Privacy and data notes, plus a short AI-use guideline for staff, ready to adopt or adapt.
  • Opportunity shortlist ranked by staff time saved, effort, cost and risk.
  • Quick-win kit: one use set up with your tools, a tested prompt library and a one-page staff guide.
  • AI roadmap: next steps, rough costs, who would do the work and possible funding sources.

Where AI often helps

  • Funder reporting and grant drafting support, using your past reports and program summaries
  • Policy and procedure questions from frontline staff and volunteers
  • Plain-English questions over your donor CRM or program data
  • Intake and inbox triage, and templated volunteer and donor messages
  • First drafts of impact and annual reports

How it works

  1. A 20-minute call to hear what's taking up your team's time.
  2. A short written proposal setting out scope, hours and deliverables.
  3. The assessment, mostly in writing, fitted around staff who carry full workloads.
  4. A close-out session to walk your team, and your board if you like, through the roadmap.

Privacy first

Many nonprofits hold sensitive information about the people they serve. I don't need access to personal information about your clients, donors or staff: the work uses your processes, templates and de-identified or sample material. Anything touching PIPA, FOIP or HIA is flagged to your own privacy or legal advisors, who make the call.

Why offer this at no cost?

I'm growing an independent practice, and real engagements are how I build experience and references. In return I ask for a named lead at your organization, honest feedback at the end and, only with your written approval, permission to describe the work as a reference. Pro-bono work is scoped and capped in writing, just like paid work. Donated services aren't receiptable gifts under CRA rules, so I can't offer a tax receipt.

AI consulting for businesses

AI advisory on data you already own

Your data infrastructure is already paid for. I help make it answer questions in plain English, inside the tools your people already use, without new security risk.

A typical pattern

An AI assistant inside your existing dashboard. Staff ask questions like “sales by region and week, compared with last year” and get answers drawn from your own data warehouse. The assistant runs as the logged-in user, so your existing logins, permissions and security stay exactly as they are.

Behind it, a tiered model design keeps costs predictable: a fast model routes each request, a workhorse model handles most of the work, and a stronger model is used only for the hard cases.

What you get

  • Discovery of your data, systems and how each user group works today.
  • A solution design document an experienced developer can build from.
  • Prompt, tool and agent design, including model selection and cost control.
  • Implementation advisory at review checkpoints, plus testing with real users.
  • A close-out report with recommendations for what comes next.

Your own team does the build and keeps implementation authority. I work alongside them as the bridge between the business need and the technical work, mostly in writing so it fits around full workloads. Engagements are scoped in writing and billed on time and materials. Most recently, I scoped this pattern for the sales dashboard of a Canadian specialty food distributor.
